THE CUMBRIA HILL FARMS CHARTER

Hill Farms use and manage the fells and moorlands of the Lake District, the Orton, Shap and Howgill Fells, and the Pennines. The Cumbria Hill Farms Charter champions the cause of hill farms and this website creates a digital record of the current hill farm status in Cumbria.

The website offers a central place where hill farmers can present the characteristics of their farms. This includes the products from their livestock, along with management of the farm environment, its bio-diversity and cultural heritage, and their contribution to public enjoyment and understanding.

BENEFITS TO THE FARMS

  • An accurate description of the farm as an asset to this region, the UK, and Europe.
  • The opening up of communication between hill farmers and members of the public and visitors, so that there is less ignorance about hill farming and its importance.
  • A website presence for purposes of trading and commercial activity.
  • The building of a farm archive/whole farm plan which could support applications for grants and/or environmental payments.
  • Joining together with other Cumbrian hill farms in a mutual support network which takes pride in quality and actively communicates the value of Cumbrian hill farms as guarantors of a sustainable cultural landscape.
