This is a traditional hill farm created and developed by generations of skilled and knowledgeable shepherds and farmers. The work of these families in the past, today, and in the future has combined care of animals with sensitive environmental management to produce a unique and invaluable asset for us all.
The primary business of the farm is education and operates to meet the demands of Newton Rigg students. It will be a resource for the new University of Cumbria.
It has been used as a research resource for agri-government agencies and for commercial interests. It has often acted as host and venue for discussion groups.
Low Beckside has been providing a service to school groups for the last 20 years and can be approached to arrange farm walks.

Low Beckside was the site for the first of Andy Goldsworthy’s Sheepfolds and he has constructed another fold on the farm. This is open to the public.
There are two footpaths through the farm. The Crow Act has opened up 70 acres of Greenah Cragg, part of which belongs to Newton Rigg.
