MIRESIDE FARM

ENNERDALE

VISITORS

Ennerdale is one of the least accessible of all the big lakes. Public access by road stops at Bowness just to the East of Mireside, but the Lake valley continues for about another 6 miles with no public roads. This lack of access has allowed Ennerdale to remain less crowded than most other places in the Lake District, even in the height of the summer season.

ACCESS

There is a well established Ennerdale lake shore walk which goes past Mireside Farm using the old drove road. The walk around the whole Lake Shore takes between 3 and 4 hours and visitors can start from either of two main car parks, Bleach green and Bowness knott. The former is the nearest to the village and saves driving up the narrow roads to Bowness.

Visitors parking at Bowness can also easily access the path up Herdus fell which is sign posted where the fell meets the road. Note this is for experienced fell walkers as it is quite a strenuous slippery scramble up the edge of a beck.

An easier walk is up the valley from Bowness which follows the lake and is on a good surface. Forestry markers indicate the route that eventually joins the popular Smithy Beck walk.
